¿Cómo se usa «be able (to)»?

Muchos lectores, tal vez algunos gocen de un buen nivel de inglés, se suelen preguntar acerca de la estructura «be able» porque les llega a confundir y aún no aciertan a comprenderla bien. Pero nadie debería asustarse, porque si esto ocurre con frecuencia, no nos extraña en absoluto, y es debido a que en el español no existe nada similar. En consecuencia, hemos decidido escribir este artículo, para sacarlos de dudas, al menos esa es nuestra intención.
¿Cómo entender las estructuras?
Para asimilar correctamente esta estructura debes tener, previamente, algunos conceptos gramaticales bien claros. Nosotros te vamos a mostrar las claves precisas para comprender como se emplea «be able (to)».
Pero, ¿qué es «be able»?
El planteamiento es fácil «be able» es el verbo «to be» más un adjetivo que es «able», el cual nunca varía en la frase. En definitiva, lo que conjugamos es el verbo «to be».
En primer término debemos aprender que be able significa “ser capaz” y que suena algo así como “bi eibol”.
¿Cuándo se usa «be able»?
Se usa en dos situaciones:
- Cuando quieres indicar que eres capaz de hacer algo, es decir, que tienes cierta «habilidad».
Por lo tanto:
He’s able to jump 100 metres
Él es capaz de saltar 100 metros.
- No obstante, en general, para indicar que se tiene «conocimiento» de alguna habilidad es más frecuente y tal vez mejor utilizar «can».
Ejemplos:

Ahora bien, cuando algo presenta cierta dificultad y lo puedes hacer, es más común utilizar «be able».
Por ejemplo:
I was able to open the door.
Pude, fui capaz de abrir la puerta
(Porque estaba atascada, por ejemplo).
En los tiempos verbales cuando se hace imposible utilizar «can» (puedo) ni «could» (pude, podría) por la razón de que no se pueden colocar dos verbos modales (*) juntos, o porque el tiempo verbal no lo permite.
Futuro
No puedo decir:
I will can go to your party next Saturday.
Podré ir tu fiesta el sábado próximo.
Sí puedo decir:
I will be able to go to your party next Saturday.
(*)»Will» y «Can» son verbos modales, por consiguiente, son verbos que modifican el «modo o aspecto» del verbo al que acompañan.
Present perfect
No puedo decir:
I haven ‘t been can to call you.
Sí puedo decir:
I haven’t been able to call you.
No he podido llamarte.
Cómo se usa «be able (to)»
Resulta necesario recordar que para emplear acertadamente «be able» has de conjugar el verbo «to be» y dejar «able» en todo caso igual debido a que, como he dicho más arriba, es un adjetivo que no variará jamás.
Por consiguiente, si has aprendido conjugar bien el verbo «to be» no te supondrá ningún sacrificio poder utilizar adecuadamente «be able»; en cambio, si no sabes cómo conjugarlo, todos serán problemas.
El consejo al que solemos ocurrir consisten en que: para utilizar acertadamente «be able» has de aprender primero a conjugar el verbo «to be».
Infinitivo con to
Ahora pon atención y observas, cómo también, detrás de «able» situamos el verbo en infinitivo con «to».
Veamos algunos ejemplos
Nota: En este ejemplos nos iremos del español al inglés, y no al contrario, para que así compruebes si te sabes bien la correspondencia entre ambos idiomas.
No fui capaz de entrar.
I wasn’t able to go in (enter).
Observaciones: como sabes, «fui» es el pasado del verbo «ser» primera persona, por consiguiente, es conveniente poner el «to be» en «Past tense» para la primera persona, es decir: «was». Pero, como además es negativo, entonces ponemos «wasn’t». Después, añadimos «able» que va siempre igual.
Por consiguiente:
No fui capaz.
I wasn’t able.
Ellos no podrán venir.
They won’t be able to come.
Observaciones: Como ves «podrán» es el futuro de «poder». Y sabrás que el futuro en inglés se construye con «will». Como he dicho más arriba, no puedo utilizar «can» ni «could» para el futuro, por consiguiente, he de apelar a la estructura «be able».
Entonces, ¿Cómo se conjuga el «to be» en futuro?

¿Y en negativo?
Es «will not», aunque frecuentemente utilicemos «won’t».

Entonces,
«No podrán»
«They won’t be able».
Otro ejemplo:
Él es capaz de mentir.
He is able to lie.
Observaciones: «Es» es el presente del verbo «ser» tercera persona. En inglés, «es» equivale a «is». Por tanto, «He is able…»
Otro ejemplo:
Ellos no habían podido dormir.
They hadn’t been able to sleep.
Observaciones: «No habían podido» es equivalente en inglés al «Past Perfect» que se forma con «had + el participio pasado del verbo principal».
En este caso, el verbo principal es el «to be» y está en negativo. Por tanto, «no habían podido» es «They hadn’t been able».
