The obstacles lie in the\u00a0<strong>different ways between how some words are spelled and how they are pronounced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"margin-bottom: 2rem; margin-top: 2rem; background: #F4F4F4;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-weight: 600; margin-bottom: 0px; color: #fff; background: #FF6868;\">\u00cdNDICE DE CONTENIDOS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#a\">A\u00a0very common\u00a0mistake<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#of\">Peculiarities of spoken English and Spanish<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#putting\">Putting it all together<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#in\">In summary<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the more phonetic languages, as in the case of Spanish, the words are pronounced as they are written (with occasional exceptions, such as the silent \u201ch\u201d in Spanish).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a\">A\u00a0very common\u00a0mistake<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most common and therefore the most frequent mistake not only in English learners but also in native speakers <strong>is knowing how to distinguish the differences between\u00a0There, Their and They&#8217;re in written English<\/strong>.\u00a0This is because these three words sound the same when they are pronounced.<\/p>\n<p>Words that\u00a0<strong>sound the same<\/strong>\u00a0but have different meanings (and sometimes spellings) are called homophones.\u00a0Therefore\u00a0There, They\u00b4re and Their (Ah\u00ed, Ellos, y su, are Homophone words).<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"of\">Peculiarities of spoken English and Spanish<\/h2>\n<p>In languages \u200b\u200blike Spanish, there is a\u00a0<strong>direct relationship between how a word is pronounced and how it is written<\/strong>.\u00a0In English, however, how a word is spelled does not necessarily tell the speaker how it should be pronounced.\u00a0There are many complexities within the English language that affect pronunciation<\/p>\n<h3>Their<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with\u00a0<em>their<\/em> (su). It is the possessive form of them, which means that it is used to be able to indicate qualities of property or belonging. Traditionally<em>,\u00a0<strong>there was<\/strong><\/em><strong> only used for the third person plural<\/strong>.\u00a0Today, it is widely used to refer to people who do not identify with a specific gender.\u00a0<em>They<\/em>\u00a0can also be used when the speaker does not know the gender of the person they are referring to.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael and Lola left their car at home as it was a fine night<em>.<br \/>\n<\/em>Michael y Lola dejaron su auto en casa porque era una buena noche.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Their house is big.<br \/>\nSu casa es grande.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>All of their friends were crazy.<br \/>\nTodos sus amigos estaban locos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The children put their books in their school bags.<br \/>\nLos ni\u00f1os ponen sus libros en sus mochilas escolare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>There<\/h3>\n<p>It is an\u00a0<strong>adverb that is used to indicate position or location<\/strong>.\u00a0In Spanish, it translates as ah\u00ed, all\u00ed o all\u00e1, depending on the context. It is also used a lot with the verb\u00a0<em>to be<\/em> (ser) to indicate the position or existence of something. <em>There<\/em> can be used as an interjection.<\/p>\n<p>For example, English speakers often say thereafter finishing an action, and there is used to express comfort.<\/p>\n<h4>What indicates there<\/h4>\n<p>If you are talking about a place or location, then you\u00a0<strong>need the word &#8220;there<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong>This word indicates where something is going or where it is.\u00a0<em>There<\/em>\u00a0can be used as an interjection.\u00a0For example, English speakers often say thereafter\u00a0finishing an action, and there is used to express consolation<\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Michael dropped his coat to the ground. Lola said, \u201cDon\u2019t put it there, Michael. Hang it on a hook.<br \/>\nMichael dej\u00f3 caer su abrigo al suelo. Lola dijo: \u201cNo lo pongas ah\u00ed, Michael. Cu\u00e9lgalo de un gancho\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Where is my book? \u2013 B: It\u2019s over there.<br \/>\n\u00bfDonde esta mi libro? \u2013 B: Est\u00e1 por ah\u00ed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I will look for a hotel to stay when I arrive there.<br \/>\nBuscar\u00e9 un hotel para quedarme cuando llegue all\u00ed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>They&#8217;re<\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>There is the contraction of \u201cthey are\u201d and is often <strong>followed by a noun, an adjective, a present participle (ing), or a past participle (ed)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201c<\/em>Where are my parents meeting us?\u201d asked Lola. \u201cThey\u2019re meeting us at the restaurant,\u201d said Michael.<br \/>\n\u201c\u00bfD\u00f3nde se reunir\u00e1n con nosotros mis padres?\u201d pregunt\u00f3 Lola. \u201cSe reunir\u00e1n con nosotros en el restaurante\u201d, dijo Michael.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u2019re happy = They are happy.<br \/>\nEst\u00e1n felices = Est\u00e1n felices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u2019re very interested in the project.<br \/>\nEst\u00e1n muy interesados en el proyecto.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I personally think they\u2019re crazy!<br \/>\nPersonalmente, creo que est\u00e1n locos!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u2019re singing loudly.<br \/>\nEst\u00e1n cantando fuerte.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"putting\">Putting it all together<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have these three in line, you can easily understand a sentence like this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTheir car is being repaired, so they\u2019re taking a cab to get there,\u201d said Michael.<br \/>\n\u201cSu coche est\u00e1 siendo reparado, as\u00ed que van a tomar un taxi para llegar all\u00ed\u201d, dijo Michael.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Want to improve your English in five minutes a day?
