    Adjectives are words that express properties or features of nouns \/ nouns.\u00a0Adjectives usually come just before the\u00a0noun\u00a0they refer to<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0Like the articles, they are adapted to the noun in grammatical gender\u00a0Geschlecht (Genus<\/em>\u00a0(gender),\u00a0Fall\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(case) and\u00a0Anzahl<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0(number).<\/p>\n

    Adjectives can be\u00a0used to attribute properties to a living being or a thing<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0The adjective is one of the inflected parts of speech.\u00a0In the attributive position between an article and a noun, match the noun in its case, number and gender.\u00a0Adjectives can also be compared \/ increased\u00a0sch\u00f6n – sch\u00f6ner – am sch\u00f6nsten<\/em>\u00a0(beautiful – beautiful – more beautiful).<\/p>\n

    What types of adjectives are there in German?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    \u00a0<\/strong>In German we differentiate between three types of adjectives:\u00a0attributive, predicative and adverbial<\/strong>\u00a0adjectives\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Predicative and adverbial adjectives are immutable<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/p>\n

    We speak of a predicative adjective when the immutable adjective\u00a0comes after the verbs\u00a0sein \/ haben \/ werden<\/em>\u00a0.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Example:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Der Clown ist lustig.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The clown is funny.<\/p>\n

      We speak of an adverbial adjective when the\u00a0immutable adjective comes after other verbs (except to be \/ to stay \/ to become).\u00a0sein \/ bleiben \/ werden<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

      Example:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Der Clown springt gl\u00fccklich.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The clown jumps happily.<\/p>\n

        Attributive<\/strong>\u00a0adjectives\u00a0are placed between the article and the noun and adapt their form to the noun<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0That is, we have to reject these adjectives and change their ending depending on whether the noun is masculine, feminine or neuter, singular or plural.<\/p>\n

        • Er ist ein sehr lustiger Clown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          He is a very funny clown.<\/p>\n

            How do you increase German adjectives?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

            \u00a0<\/strong>We use augmentation forms of adjectives when we compare something to each other.\u00a0There are three levels in German:<\/strong><\/p>\n

              \n
            • Positive<\/li>\n
            • Comparative<\/li>\n
            • Superlative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Comparison with the basic form of the adjective – positive<\/strong><\/h2>\n

              The positive form is the\u00a0basic form of the adjective<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0We use them in comparisons with such … how.<\/p>\n

              Example:<\/p>\n

              • Maria l\u00e4uft so schnell wie Susanne.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                Maria runs as fast as Susanne.<\/p>\n

                Other phrases for positive comparisons are:<\/p>\n

                          Adjective increase – comparative<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                          The comparative is the first form of comparison.\u00a0When using the comparative,\u00a0we attach -er to the basic form of<\/strong>\u00a0the adjective.\u00a0To compare with something else, we use the word like.<\/p>\n

                          Example:<\/p>\n

                            \n
                          • Friederike l\u00e4uft schneller als Maria.<\/em><\/li>\n
                          • Maria l\u00e4uft langsamer als gestern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                            Friederike runs faster than Maria.<\/em><\/p>\n

                            Maria runs slower than yesterday.<\/p>\n

                            Adjective augmentation – superlative<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                            \u00a0<\/strong>The superlative is the highest form of magnification.\u00a0There are two ways to form the German superlative:<\/strong><\/p>\n

                              \n
                            • am + adjective ending \u2013sten<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                              Adverbial adjectives\u00a0always form the superlative with am<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0Predicative adjectives can form the superlative with am (or with the definite article).<\/p>\n

                              Example:<\/p>\n

                              • Friederike l\u00e4uft am schnellsten.\u00a0<\/em>(adverbial)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                Friederike is the fastest.\u00a0(adverbial)<\/p>\n

                                  definite article + adjective ending -ste<\/p>\n

                                  Attributive adjectives always form the superlative with the specific article.\u00a0Predicative adjectives can form the superlative with the definite article (or with am).<\/p>\n

                                      Verbs are\u00a0often<\/strong>\u00a0used\u00a0between an article and a noun<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0An adjective used as an attribute is inflected after case, number, and gender.<\/p>\n

                                      Predicative adjective<\/strong><\/h3>\n

                                      A predicative adjective comes\u00a0after the verbs to be, to stay and to become.<\/strong><\/p>\n

                                        \n
                                      1. a) Der Strau\u00df ist wundersch\u00f6n.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                        The bouquet is beautiful.<\/p>\n

                                          \n
                                        1. b) Nachts wird is k\u00fchl.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                          It gets cool at night.<\/p>\n

                                          Adverbial adjective<\/strong><\/h3>\n

                                          An adverbial adjective\u00a0comes after another verb (except to be, to stay, and to become<\/strong>\u00a0) and defines it more precisely.\u00a0In the following sentences we can ask for the adverbial adjective with the interrogative word “How?”\u00a0It assumes the function of an adverbial (in our example a modal adverbial) and determines the action expressed by the preceding verb.<\/p>\n

                                          • Sie rennt schnell nach Hause.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                            She runs home quickly.<\/p>\n

                                            • Der Lehrer spricht langsam und deutlich<\/em>\u00a0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                              The teacher speaks slowly and clearly.<\/p>\n

                                              Declension of adjectives<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                                              Adjectives before a noun correspond to gender (masculine, feminine, neutral), number (singular, plural) and case (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive).\u00a0For the declension of adjectives it\u00a0is necessary that you master the declension of definite articles.<\/strong><\/p>\n
