{"id":6837,"date":"2021-04-09T07:29:21","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T07:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elblogdeidiomas.es\/?p=6837"},"modified":"2021-04-01T19:36:44","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T19:36:44","slug":"minimum-pairs-in-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elblogdeidiomas.es\/en\/minimum-pairs-in-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum pairs in English"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><strong>Minimum pairs in English<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>It is very likely that while studying English you have noticed that there are many words that seem to sound the same or similar.\u00a0And that in addition, many times they are also written in a very similar way.\u00a0If anything, they differ only by one letter.\u00a0Well, these words have a name.\u00a0<strong>They are called &#8221;\u00a0<em>minimal pairs&#8221;<\/em> , and it is a phenomenon that exists in all languages, even in sign language.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What are minimum torques?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When we speak of a minimal pair we are referring to a\u00a0<strong>pair of words that are only differentiated by one phoneme.\u00a0<\/strong>Due to this difference, and to the similarity between the rest of the phonemes, linguists are in a position to analyze the coexistence of sound and meaning in the words of a language.\u00a0The correct conclusion is that logically different sounds imply different meanings, with which minimal pairs become the easiest way to identify phonemes in a language.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Minimum pairs in English<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the case that we are dealing with English, we must, of course, take into account the pronunciation.\u00a0And it is that you can find\u00a0<strong>minimal pairs as obvious as\u00a0<em>hit<\/em> (golpear) and <em>hid<\/em> (esconder), while others like <em>jail<\/em> (c\u00e1rcel) and <em>Yale<\/em>\u00a0(yes the famous university)<\/strong>\u00a0are, for the average English student, much more difficult to identify with the naked eye.\u00a0Especially for those of us who have a native language that barely differentiates between how a word is written and how it is pronounced.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0<em>jail<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Yale<\/em>\u00a0are minimal pairs.\u00a0In English,\u00a0<em>spelling<\/em>\u00a0of minimal pairs, that is, the way words are spelled, doesn&#8217;t have to be alike at all.\u00a0As long as that only phonetic difference exists, one can speak of minimal pairs.\u00a0Thus,\u00a0<em>jail<\/em>\u00a0is pronounced \/ \u02c8d\u0292e\u026al \/, and\u00a0<em>Yale<\/em>\u00a0is pronounced \/ je\u026al \/.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Junction of English words<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>In English, minimum pairs not only occur between single words, but can appear in certain short sentences<\/strong>\u00a0, especially through processes such as diphthongation between the end of one word and the beginning of the next.\u00a0To understand each other better: it may be the case that two words in a row sound the same as two totally different words in a row.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For example, we have\u00a0<em>great ape<\/em>\u00a0and also\u00a0<em>gray tape<\/em>\u00a0which are minimal pairs.\u00a0If read quickly, the diphthong makes them sound like a single word, \/\u00a0<em>\u0261re\u026ate\u026ap<\/em>\u00a0\/.\u00a0And neither their respective writing nor their meaning have anything to do with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This difference between two groups of words like\u00a0<strong>these is called\u00a0<em>juncture<\/em>\u00a0in English<\/strong>\u00a0, which has been translated as &#8220;joint&#8221;;\u00a0or, since we are talking about oral expression, coarticulation.\u00a0This &#8220;joint&#8221;
