{"id":6779,"date":"2021-02-19T08:11:24","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T08:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elblogdeidiomas.es\/?p=6779"},"modified":"2021-02-14T13:13:02","modified_gmt":"2021-02-14T13:13:02","slug":"stative-verbs-in-english","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elblogdeidiomas.es\/en\/stative-verbs-in-english\/","title":{"rendered":"Stative Verbs in English"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Stative Verbs in English<\/h1>\n<p>The importance of knowing the verbs in English is CRUCIAL.\u00a0Perhaps you remember that in the post of\u00a0<strong>the verb tenses in English<\/strong>\u00a0we commented on several occasions that there was not everything.\u00a0We wanted to make a slightly less data heavy posts, to focus only on the foundations of verb tenses.\u00a0In today&#8217;s post we are going to talk about one of the branches that come out of the verb tenses and that you should know: the static verbs in English or &#8216;Stative verbs&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2>What are &#8216;Stative Verbs&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>They are verbs that CANNOT be used continuously<\/strong>\u00a0, that is, in those verbs that must be conjugated continuously, they will NOT be formulated like this.\u00a0Statives Verbs are verbs that describe states, conditions, and situations.<\/p>\n<p>For example: remember &#8211;\u00a0<del>remembering<\/del>;\u00a0want &#8211;\u00a0<del>wanting<\/del>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Verbs that\u00a0<strong>CAN be formulated continuously are called Dynamic Verbs,<\/strong>\u00a0for example: work &#8211; working.<\/p>\n<h2>What categories do &#8216;Stative Verbs&#8217; have?<\/h2>\n<p>They can be grouped into several, such as:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>State verbs:<\/strong>\u00a0They express opinion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>agree, think, believe, disagree, feel, doubt, depend, understand, know, mean, remember, seem, look (= seem), mind, suppose, guess, appear, matter, concern, realize<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0<strong>Verbs about likes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>like, dislike, prefer, love, hate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong>Verbs about possession<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have, possess, belong, own, owe, lack, include, involve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4.\u00a0<strong>Verbs that express characteristics of something<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>weigh, measure, consist, contain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5.\u00a0<strong>Verbs that express need<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>need, want, wish, deserve &#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6.\u00a0<strong>Verbs related to perception<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sound, hear, taste, see, smell, imagine, recognize, satisfy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Are there any exceptions to &#8216;Stative Verbs&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, they are\u00a0<strong>the so-called Mixed Verbs<\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0They are verbs that can be formulated as Stative Verbs but also as Dynamic Verbs.\u00a0They are also verbs that include under themselves, different meanings, and are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>be, have, think, see, taste (smell), and mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see one by one why they can be static or dynamic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>The verb to be&#8217;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She<strong>\u00a0is<\/strong>\u00a0friendly \u2014&gt; Ella es amable.<\/p>\n<p>Here we find the static form of the verb, because it is a characteristic of that person<\/p>\n<p>She is<strong>\u00a0being<\/strong>\u00a0friendly \u2014&gt; Ella est\u00e1 siendo amable<\/p>\n<p>Here the verb becomes dynamic, because in reality, it is not usually friendly;\u00a0but at that moment it is.\u00a0It is not an innate characteristic of that person.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>The verb &#8216;to have&#8217;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u00a0<strong>have<\/strong>\u00a0a job \u2014&gt; Tengo un trabajo<\/p>\n<p>We find in this example, one of the forms of static verbs, when they refer to possession<\/p>\n<p>Are you\u00a0<strong>having<\/strong>\u00a0a good time? \u2014&gt;\u00a0\u00bfLo est\u00e1s pasando bien?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>The verb &#8216;to think&#8217;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u00a0<strong>think<\/strong>\u00a0it is wrong to smoke \u2014&gt; Pienso que est\u00e1 mal fumar<\/p>\n<p>Here the verb think is in opinion mode, so it should be treated as a static verb<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m\u00a0<strong>thinking<\/strong>\u00a0about buying a new car \u2014&gt; Estoy pensando en comprarme un coche nuevo<\/p>\n<p>In this sentence it reflects a thought, an idea, simply.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>The verb &#8216;to see&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0:<\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This verb is very particular, because it can have different meanings.\u00a0If it is in static mode, it can mean\u00a0<strong>seeing<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>understanding<\/strong>\u00a0;\u00a0but, if it is switched to dynamic mode, it has two other different meanings which are\u00a0<strong>meeting someone<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>having a relationship.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0<strong>see<\/strong>\u00a0what you mean\u2014&gt; Entiendo lo que quieres decir<br \/>\nI\u00a0<strong>see<\/strong>\u00a0you now, you are in front of the bookshop \u2014&gt;\u00a0Ahora te veo, est\u00e1s delante de la librer\u00eda<\/p>\n<p>Two clear examples of the verb To See in static mode, with their two corresponding meanings<\/p>\n<p>I\u00b4m\u00a0<strong>seeing<\/strong>\u00a0Mary this afternoon \u2014&gt; Voy a ver a Mary esta tarde<br \/>\nI\u00b4ve been\u00a0<strong>seeing<\/strong>\u00a0my girlfriend since last August<i>\u00a0\u2014&gt;\u00a0<\/i>He estado viendo a mi novia desde agosto del a\u00f1o pasado<\/p>\n<p>The verb becomes dynamic when it refers to the verbs to meet someone or have a relationship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>&#8216;to taste&#8217;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The food\u00a0<strong>tastes<\/strong>\u00a0good<i>\u00a0\u2014&gt;\u00a0<\/i>La comida sabe bien<\/p>\n<p>Static form, is giving an opinion<br \/>\nThe cook is tasting the food \u2014&gt; El cocinero est\u00e1 probando la comida<\/p>\n<p>Dynamic way, the cook is performing an action.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h4><strong>The verb to mind<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don\u2019t\u00a0<strong>mind<\/strong>\u00a0if we watch a movie tonight \u2014&gt;
