The subject is usually a noun, a word that names a person, place or thing. A verb (or predicate) generally follows the subject and identifies an action or state of being. An object receives the action and generally follows the verb.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"frases\"><strong>Prepositive phrases<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Like adjectives and adverbs, prepositional phrases add meaning to nouns and verbs in sentences.\u00a0<strong>A prepositional phrase has two basic parts<\/strong>\u00a0: a preposition plus a noun or a pronoun that serves as the object of the preposition.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"estructura\"><strong>Basic sentence structure<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><em>There are four basic sentence structures in English:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>simple sentence<\/strong>\u00a0is a sentence with a single independent clause (also called a main clause) &#8211; Judy laughed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compound<\/strong>\u00a0sentence contains at least two independent clauses: Judy laughed and Jimmy cried.<\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>complex sentence<\/strong>\u00a0contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause: Jimmy cried when Judy laughed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compound complex<\/strong>\u00a0sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause: Judy laughed and Jimmy cried as the clowns ran past their seats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"tipos\"><strong>Four functional types of sentences<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>There are four main types of sentences that can be distinguished by their function and purpose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>declarative sentence<\/strong>\u00a0makes a declaration:\u00a0<em>babies cry<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0(los bebes lloran).<\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>interrogative sentence<\/strong>\u00a0asks a question:\u00a0<em>Why do babies cry?\u00a0<\/em>(\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 lloran los bebes?)<\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>imperative sentence<\/strong>\u00a0gives instructions or expresses a request or demand:\u00a0<em>Please, shut up<\/em> (Por favor, callate).<\/li>\n<li>An\u00a0<strong>exclamatory sentence<\/strong> expresses strong feelings by making an exclamation: Shut up!
