    Identify your common mistakes in French<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    \u00a0<\/strong>Je suis bien<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    This is a literal translation.\u00a0<\/strong>To ask “how are you?”, The French ask “how are going?”, Using the verb to go instead of be. So when they ask you for example:\u00a0comment \u00e7a va<\/em>\u00a0?, Do you go well?\u00a0or is it going<\/em>\u00a0?\u00a0do not answer with\u00a0well<\/em>\u00a0, or\u00a0je suis bien<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0For this you\u00a0have to use the verb\u00a0aller<\/em>\u00a0since they are asking you with\u00a0<\/strong>aller:<\/strong>\u00a0je vais bien, \u00e7a va bien or \u00e7a va.<\/em><\/p>\n

    On the contrary, you can use\u00a0je suis bien<\/strong>\u00a0when you speak of being in a place:\u00a0ici, je suis bien, je me sens bien.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>(I’m fine here, I feel fine).<\/p>\n

    Add “a” in front of people<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    In Spanish, the grammar requires\u00a0the use of the preposition “a” before a complement of person:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Yo conozco a Laura = Je connais Laura.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      On the other hand, in French,\u00a0this rule does not exist!\u00a0<\/strong>Putting the preposition “a” after a verb and before a complement of person is, therefore, a mistake to avoid.<\/p>\n

      Remember this rule<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      You often confuse the verb\u00a0<\/strong>se rappeller<\/em>\u00a0“to remember” and the verb\u00a0se souvenir<\/em>\u00a0“to remember.”\u00a0The verb\u00a0se rappeler quelque chose<\/em>\u00a0\u201cto remember something\u201d is a direct transitive verb, that is, it is constructed without a preposition.\u00a0The verb\u00a0se souvenir de quelque chose<\/em>\u00a0\u201cto remember something\u201d is, on the other hand, an indirect transitive verb so it is constructed with the preposition \u201c\u00a0of<\/em>\u00a0\u201d.<\/p>\n

      You have to say<\/strong>\u00a0:\u00a0Je me rappelle cette r\u00e8gle ou Je me souviens de cette r\u00e8gle<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0(I remember this rule or I remember this rule).<\/p>\n

      Note:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      If you want to use a complement pronoun, you will\u00a0use a direct object pronoun (le, la, les) for the verb “to remember”:<\/strong><\/p>\n

          If the verb “to remember” is followed by a pronoun<\/strong>\u00a0, the preposition of:<\/p>\n

            • Il se rappelle de toi.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              He remembers you.<\/p>\n

              We\u00a0can<\/strong>\u00a0also\u00a0use \u201cde\u201d after \u201cremember\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0when it is followed by a present infinitive that expresses an action that should not be forgotten to perform.<\/p>\n

                  Previously, we used the verb\u00a0visiter<\/em>\u00a0“to visit” in the sense of “going to someone to pay him a visit.”\u00a0Today,\u00a0the verb \u201cvisit\u201d is used almost exclusively for a place or a monument\u00a0<\/strong>: On visite une ville, un mus\u00e9e, un pays<\/em>\u00a0.\u00a0(We visit a city, a museum, a country).<\/p>\n

                  With a person, we prefer the\u00a0verbe rendre visite \u00e0 ou aller voir quelqu’un<\/em>\u00a0(the verb to visit or go see someone).<\/p>\n

                  Then you have to say: <\/strong>Je vais rendre visite \u00e0 mes parents ou Je vais voir mes parents<\/em>. (voy a visitar a mis padres o voy a ver a mis padres).<\/p>\n

                  Note<\/strong><\/h4>\n

                  As the Acad\u00e9mie fran\u00e7aise says<\/strong>\u00a0, you can use\u00a0visiter to<\/em>\u00a0\u201cvisit\u201d a person in certain fixed expressions.\u00a0When we say “visit a person,” we mean a person who is suffering.\u00a0One person visits another out of compassion, charity.<\/p>\n

                      “Thanks a lot”<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n

                      To thank, he\u00a0often writes\u00a0“milles mercis<\/em>\u00a0” “thank you very much.”\u00a0<\/strong>This expression is correct but it is misspelled.\u00a0The word\u00a0merci<\/em>\u00a0“thank you” is effectively numbered, so if there is more than one\u00a0mercis<\/em>\u00a0“thank you”, you must add an “s”.\u00a0On the other hand,\u00a0the numerical adjective “thousand” is invariable<\/strong>\u00a0, so it never has an “s”.<\/p>\n

                      Can I ask a question?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                      In French,\u00a0the expression “ask a question” cannot be used<\/strong>\u00a0simply because the verb “ask” is incompatible with the word “question”.\u00a0You must use the verb “pose”.<\/p>\n

                      You should say:\u00a0Je peux poser une question<\/em>\u00a0(Can I ask a question?)<\/p>\n

                      I am going to the doctor.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                      \u201c\u00a0Au<\/em> \u201d (al) is here the contraction of the preposition \u201c\u00e0\u201d and the article \u201cdefines\u201d he \u201d.<\/p>\n

                      In French,\u00a0we use the preposition \u201c\u00e0\u201d with an inanimate place name<\/strong>\u00a0, that is, a place that does not designate a person, for example:<\/p>\n

                      • \u00e0 la mairie, \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que, \u00e0 l’h\u00f4pital, au cabinet medical.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        Forget articles<\/strong><\/h2>\n

                        The difficulty is that in Spanish\u00a0there is no article in the indefinite plural<\/strong>\u00a0(equivalent to \u201cdes\u201d) while in French it is essential.<\/p>\n

                        And be careful, some is not ‘tuoujoirs’ equivalent to the article \u201cdes\u201d in French:<\/p>\n
